Job opening: Workshop Coordinator

Part-time independent contractor

This person will be responsible for organizing BBR’s popular home improvement workshops.

  • In advance of each workshop series (Fall and Winter/Spring), meet with BBR staff and gather information and suggestions needed to set up the workshop schedule. Brainstorm new ideas for workshops and new instructors.

  • Contact instructors and schedule/organize selected classes.

  • Compile information for the printed schedule, writing class descriptions that will encourage participation.

  • Organize sign-up spreadsheet.

  • Keep in touch with instructors about their classes via phone and/or email.

  • Remind students by phone call or email on the Tuesday before the workshop.

  • Prepare workshop space (shop, conference room, or off-site location).

  • Prepare coffee and snacks for class participants.

  • Order necessary class supplies and materials; prepare handouts and nametags for classes.

  • Attend workshops when necessary, such as in support of a first-time instructor or with off-site workshops.

  • Take photos of classes in action for use in future print and online communications.

  • Hand out and collect evaluation forms. Highlight noteworthy comments and share with staff and instructor when appropriate.

 Qualifications

  • Familiarity with construction, building materials, or home improvement

We expect this work to take an average of 3-4 hours per week. Some weeks will involve more hours than others. There are no workshops during the summer and the December holidays. Much of the work can be done remotely. On-site work will include 8 to 10 Saturdays per year. The candidate will set their own schedule and keep track of their hours, and will have access to BBR’s Microsoft 365 cloud and telephone system.

Job opening: Reuse Center Retail Salesperson

Full time

The Retail Salesperson position requires an outgoing person who enjoys interacting with people regularly, who is familiar with building materials and home improvement, and who has the ability to multitask and to maintain a high level of accuracy when recording transaction details. We generally get to know our customers/members by name, which makes for a unique shopping experience. Our customers are primarily motivated homeowners seeking not only affordable, good-quality materials, but also ideas and strategies for maintaining and improving their homes. A desire to share one’s knowledge related to home improvement is a trait we look for in hiring new staff.

Job Description

Customer Service & In-Store Sales

  • Greet members and customers when they enter the store.

  • Explain overall Reuse Center (RC) program to new customers including our buying, deposit, and pick-up policies.

  • Explain the RC’s income-based “Plus” membership to new customers.

  • Answer customers’ questions and direct them to the materials they are looking for.

  • Process sales via POS (point of sale) retail sales program.

  • Clearly mark “sold” and “pick-up date” on materials for which someone has rendered a deposit.

  • Follow up with sales that have been left on deposit to ensure prompt movement of materials out of the warehouse/store.

  • Assist customers with loading materials in a vehicle, so long as the materials can be fastened securely. If in doubt, ask management for second opinion.

  • Maintain a clean, neat, and professional appearance, and treat customers fairly and courteously at all times.

  • Answer phones and respond to customer phone inquiries; retrieve messages and return calls. Maintain a log of phone messages and responses.

  • Keep the sales office organized and stocked with necessary supplies.

  • Organize and oversee storage area for supplies and for small parts associated with items for sale, keeping it easy for other staff to navigate.

Warehouse/Store Organization and Maintenance

  • Contribute to maintaining an organized, clean, safe warehouse/store, both inside and out, including keeping aisles clean and free of materials.

  • Assist with design and implementation of special displays to showcase certain materials.

  • Help with trash control and collection as well as learn and practice company-mandated recycling procedures.

  • Organize and restock display of LED bulbs and fixtures, including managing back-room stock.

  • Coordinate with Program Manager to establish daily/weekly/long-term goals for materials organization and display.

  • Assist with the direction of volunteers around the warehouse, including instructing them on specific tasks, safety precautions, and checking on work completed.

General/Other

  • Pursue knowledge of materials we sell – appropriate uses and fair market values.

  • Attend monthly staff meetings.

  • Help with snow shoveling as needed.

  • Backup to drivers for pickups, deliveries and fill in for vacations.

Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in construction, building materials, or related retail sales

  • Knowledge of building materials suitable for residential use

  • Some knowledge of fair market values for new and used building materials

  • Ability to work as team member as well as alone

  • Organization and communication skills

  • Demonstrated history of reliability

  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced work environment

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 100 lbs. occasionally, from varying positions

  • Bilingual in Spanish or Kreyol a plus

  • Computer literate in MS Office

  • Available to work Saturdays

Salary & Benefits

  • Wages depending on experience and qualifications
